2008 BREAK-A-THON FUNDRAISER AT HONBU DOJO

It was a windy but sunny day on Saturday May 17th when the students of the Aiki Te Ryu Karate Kai Honbu Dojo set out to smash wood and earn some funds. The Break-A-Thon is an annual fundraiser held at the honbu dojo to raise money that replaces broken equipment, pays the insurance bill and offers scholarships to less fortunate children to participate in classes. Over 50 students began the ceremony with a traditional bow in and then went right to work achieving their goals at the Bryan, Ohio dojo.

The action began with over 20 students attempting to smash through six boards at once, with no spacers, hoping to win a free T-shirt. Each student gave it their all but in the end David Lion, a brown belt, crushed the boards with a knife hand technique to become victorious. The next event was to win the Best Non-Martial Arts break. Student smashed through the wood with baseball bats, hammers, and even their own butts in hopes to win. The winner, Riley Schultz, had a face painted on a paper bag and made it eat a rock and then hurled it through the wood to become the winner. It was unique and very well thought through.

Other contests were watched with impressive ability by students from the Aiki Te Ryu Karate Kai as they performed combination breaks, highest break, most difficult break and the craziest break. Students slammed through boards, crushing the wood with their knees, elbows, fist and Tres Loyd even broke a board with a White Crane Thumb Strike! The contest then concluded as we went into the Five Minute Challenge portion of the event with Mike Kurivial taking the win by smashing 90 boards and Randy Henricks came in second with 76 boards broken in 5 minutes!

During the event it was recorded by Mark Fox or Fox Media Services and is to be aired throughout the region on the Video Countdown. This show airs locally on BMU TV as well as WDTV26 out of Defiance. During the video the hosts of the show learned and successfully smashed through boards with their hands! They both claimed it hurt but you could tell that was replaced quickly by their fascination with actually smashing the wood!
